The Merrimac Public Library Calls for Submissions to the 2006 Wadleigh Award

Press Release, April 3rd, 2006

The Merrimac Public Library is now accepting essay submissions from junior and senior students at Pentucket Regional High School who are Merrimac residents.

The Wadleigh Award is offered through a trust established by lifelong Merrimac resident, Albert Wadleigh. Mr. Wadleigh was an avid student of local history, particularly of the early English settlement of what are now Essex County in Massachusetts, Rockingham County in New Hampshire, and York County in Maine. To encourage this interest among today’s students, Mr. Wadleigh directed the Trustees of the Merrimac Public Library to offer an annual award of a cash prize to the best historical essay submitted by a student from Merrimac. The prize offered for 2006 is $1,000.

Essays must meet the requirements as defined in the Wadleigh Award guidelines, which can be obtained at the Library or by emailing merrimacpublib@yahoo.com. The Library Trustees will judge all essays received by May 5, 2006, based on accuracy and talent. They look forward to receiving thoughtful, well-researched work, and hope this also encourages students to use the many resources the Library has to offer.

The Merrimac Public Library is located at 86 West Main Street. Please visit www.merrimaclibrary.org for hours and more information.
