Safety Tips for Open Burning Season

The Merrimac Fire Department reminds our residents that the Open Burning Season in Massachusetts starts January 15th and Ends May 1st each year, when and where allowed.

Each year, you must obtain a written burning permit from the Merrimac Communications Center by visiting the center located in the Merrimac Police/Fire Department Building.

Once you obtain your permit, you will also receive written rules including instructions to call each day you wish to obtain approval for burning by contacting the Merrimac Communications Center at 978-346-8111.

Weather conditions, lack of rain and moisture, wind and other factors may suspend the granting of an authorization to begin burning at any time.  Just because you have a burning permit, does not automatically give you authorization to commence burning.  You must obtain approval daily from the Merrimac Communications Center.

Please click on the attachment above for general rules and safety tips.

You may also visit the following link to the Mass Department of Environmental Protection (DEP).  Click on the page titled "Open Burning in Massachusetts:  Answers to Your Burning Questions."
